Computer and Internet Use Policy

MISSION STATEMENT: We open doors for curious minds.

PURPOSE OF POLICY

Anythink provides access to technology and the internet as a service to meet the educational, research and recreational needs of its customers. This policy defines the appropriate use of computers, internet, Wi-Fi and other online resources at Anythink Libraries, including items which may be borrowed such as hotspots or other cellular devices. There are many sources on the internet; not all provide information that is complete, accurate or inoffensive. No single entity, including Anythink, has control of the information available on the internet. Each user is responsible for their use of the internet in Anythink's public spaces, and parents or guardians are solely responsible for supervising the internet use of their children.

FILTERING

Anythink filters all internet use in compliance with local, state and federal laws mandating the filtering of internet use in public libraries. Please be aware that filtering software is never completely accurate. The filter may block sites that are acceptable in a library setting or may fail to block something illegal or objectionable. Adult customers may request that authorized staff temporarily disable the filter.

CUSTOMER AND ANYTHINK RESPONSIBILITIES

Anythink and its customers share responsibility for providing a space where all feel welcome and comfortable, and for ensuring equitable access to computers, the internet, Wi-Fi and online resources. Anythink is not responsible for any damage to users’ hardware or storage devices, or for any damage, liability or loss of data that may occur from use of library equipment or Wi-Fi.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Customers will agree to and follow the Anythink Computer and Internet Use Policy when using library computers, the wireless network, a hotspot or any cellular device provided by Anythink.
  • Customers will comply with all local, state and federal laws, including copyright laws.
  • Customers will not intentionally use computers for illegal activities, to access illegal materials, or to develop, distribute, upload or propagate viruses, malware or spam.
  • Customers will not use computers or other library technology to view pornography or sexually explicit material.
  • Customers will respect the rights and privacy of others.
  • Customers will not attempt unauthorized access to any computer system, including disabling filters or so-called hacking.
  • Customers will not intentionally damage equipment, software or data belonging to Anythink or others.
  • Customers will responsibly check out and return hotspots, laptops and other technology items.

ANYTHINK RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Anythink will provide public computers, internet and Wi-Fi access to all customers in good standing. However, Anythink cannot guarantee the internet or Wi-Fi access will always be available or that Anythink systems will work with all devices.
  • Anythink will comply with all local, state and federal laws.
  • Anythink will not retain data on internet use, such as websites visited or credit card numbers. All data from a customer’s session on an Anythink computer is erased when the session ends.
  • Anythink will provide dedicated computers or peripherals that offer adaptive options for accessibility.
  • Anythink may place limitations on time, place and manner of computer use in order to provide equitable access to as many people as possible.
  • Anythink staff can provide limited assistance with internet and technology use. Staff may not be able to provide technical assistance in all instances or on all applications.
