I have noticed a growing fascination with all things Amish and I'm wondering why. What is it? Is it the simplistic lifestyle of the Amish that fascinates so many people who are running around, constantly on the go from here to there? Are some people perhaps a little envious of the slower-paced, simple ways of Amish life, wishing their own life was a little less hectic? Maybe it is how dedicated the Amish are to walk out their faith with steadfast diligence, remaining true to their traditions for centuries. Or could it be that the Amish are just so unique in their way of life (all dressing the same and living without electricity, internet, cars, etc.) and self-isolated that some people just find them curious? Perhaps some of the interest has been fueled by recent television shows such as Amish Mafia and Breaking Amish.

Whatever the reasons may be, here are a few Amish-themed materials (of the many we have at Anythink) that I have enjoyed:

Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult is the gripping story of a teenage Amish girl who is psychologically tormented by her unwanted pregnancy. When the infant is found dead and the young mother can't recall what happened, urban defense attorney Ellie Hathaway is assigned to the case. What results is as dramatic as any legal thriller out there. This moving story has also been released as a Lifetime movie, Plain Truth.

The Shunning is a movie (based on the novel by Beverly Lewis) about a beautiful Amish girl, Katie Lapp, who has always felt like something in her life was missing. But she just may find out what that is when a mysterious "Englisher" comes to Lancaster County hoping to find the baby girl she gave up for adoption 19 years ago. 

Linda Castillo is the New York Times Bestselling author of the Kate Burkholder thrillers. Castillo has created a very likeable, very believable character in Chief of Police Kate Burkholder who, despite her tough-cop persona, is able to relate in a very meaningful and personal way to many of the Amish residents of Painters Mill, Ohio, since she was formerly one of them. Book one in the series is Sworn to Silence.

Wanda E Brunstetter's Amish Friends Cookbook: Desserts is anything but plain and simple. This collection of recipes is both mouthwatering and comforting. This cookbook is delight to peruse through and even more to try.
