An adult woman with a natural afro hairstyle sitting on a couch with an open book in one hand, and sipping from a mug.

Picture this: It’s a cold, wintery day outside. There’s snow on the ground and, even with the sun shining above, the temperature is below freezing. But you’re inside cuddled up on your couch with a fuzzy blanket and a warm cup of coffee/tea/cocoa (because, you know, beverages). Maybe even the smell of cookies baking in the oven is wafting through the air...

What’s the one thing missing from this picture? A good book (or two or three) to keep you company as you curl up against the cold!

Reckless, a new novel by the author of Inkheart, will be appearing on several summer reading lists this year.

School’s nearly out, and that it means it’s time for:

Road trips?

Summer barbeques?

Hanging out at the pool?

No, summer reading lists of course!

Summer reading is a long-standing tradition of assigning incoming 6th-12th graders books to read between July and August. The idea is to avoid the “summer slide,” an annual dip in students’ reading abilities over the vacation months, and to give English classes something to dive into right at the start of the next school year.

It's happening: the days are getting shorter, the air is getting colder and each new weather forecast brings the possibility of snow. Winter is upon us. For many Coloradans, this means it's time to break out the skis and snowboards, but for athletically challenged bookworms (read: nerds) like myself, winter provides a great excuse to curl up out of the cold and do one thing: read, read, read. So when many of my friends are headed to the slopes, I'm heading to the couch with a book, a hot beverage and a couple of dogs in tow.
