One last read
Well, here we are - December 2012 and the ominous date of 12/21/12 is fast approaching. For weeks I kept referring to 12/12/12 as the ominous day until my daughter kindly informed me I had it all wrong – something teenage daughters are good at, I might add. It turns out there is nothing special about 12/12/12 except that it's the last repetitive date we will ever see.
However, December 21, 2012, is the day we’ve been counting down to since the discovery of the Mayan calendar, right? I mean, it's the reason we are inundated with books like The Twelve, In the Courts of the Sun and The Mayan Code, and movies like Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Doomsday 2012. 12/21/12 is the reason we’re all talking about what’s on our bucket lists rather than what’s on our New Year’s resolution lists. And really, honestly, it's much more fun to think up what I want to do rather than what I should do. Which would you choose? A list that includes things like swimming with dolphins, cooking lessons in Italy, having an all-night favorite-movie marathon and skydiving, or a list that includes exercise more and eat less, clean house every week and organize closets? It's definitely more fun to think about what we want to do!
So here’s a question for you, just for kicks: if 12/21/12 is doomsday (and that is a BIG if), what would you choose to be your last read? What book out there calls for one more final reading or just to finally be read?
Oh and in case you're wondering, my choice for a one-last-time read would be Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. This book is just so beautifully written it has found a place in my heart forever.
