Family Place Libraries is a network of children’s librarians nationwide who believe that literacy begins at birth, and that libraries can help build healthy communities by nourishing healthy families. Parents and caregivers with children ages birth-3 are welcome to sign up for this five-week series beginning Oct. 6. Different childhood experts will be on hand to talk to parents and play with children. Each week, new learning and exploration activities will be offered. Space is limited; registration required.

Who knew you could have this much fun at the library? We’ve got great programs for teens here at Anythink Washington Street. Appropriate for teens in grades 6-12.

  • Oct. 5:  TAB – Get involved and let your voice and your opinion about the library be heard through the Teen Advisory Board (TAB).
  • Oct. 12: Ping Pong – You all have been asking for it, so here it is! We’ll play a few friendly games of ping pong and watch some footage of championship matches.
  • Oct. 19: Cake Pops – Enjoy this bite-sized snack while also learning how to make this delicious treat on your own.
  • Oct. 26: Movie Afternoon – Join us for a special two-hour movie afternoon with a PG-13 film. Pizza and drinks provided. You must be 13 years old to attend.

  • Oct. 4: Bingo for Books – Bingo! Join us to play this simple and incredibly fun game to win books and other treats from our varied collection for all ages.
  • Oct. 11: The Gabriel Foundation – A member of the parrot welfare organization, the Gabriel Foundation is coming to all the way to Anythink Washington Street so that you can learn more about and interact with this magnificent feathered creature.
  • Oct. 18: Cake Pops – Enjoy this bite-sized snack while also learning how to make this delicious treat on your own.
  • Oct. 25: Pillowcase Treat Bags – Use fabric paint and an old pillowcase to make the perfect place to lay your head or to collect lots of candy!

A new way to explore early literacy! This drop-in program is for children through 6 years old and their parents. Six different centers will be set up, reflecting one of each of the early literacy skills. Centers may include books, hands-on activities, crafts or music. Participants will be gathered together two times during the hour to do a group movement or story activity. This is a new and exciting way to create the path to lifelong learning.

Do you know how to surf? Get some tips on how to effectively surf the Internet. Rather than fishing through numerous results, you’ll learn how to get more relevant, quality results from a search engine. The class requires participants to have basic computer skills, such as how to use a mouse and keyboard. All ages are welcome. Space is limited; registration required.

Share the practice of yoga with your child in a fun, playful space. Families will leave with the tools to continue the yogic journey off of their mats, including songs, games, affirmations in motion, partner poses to practice at home, and resting/savasana exercises. Please bring a yoga mat, towel or small blanket. Appropriate for students in grades K-6 and their caregivers. Come and read to our special listening dogs – they love a good story! Our dogs come from the American Humane Association and are specially trained. This is for children aged 6-12. An especially good experience for reluctant readers or children who are afraid of dogs. Space is limited, so please register at the front desk.
