It’s Mardi Gras, which means beads, celebration and…King Cake! King Cake is a delicious treat made during Mardi Gras, a tradition that dates all the way back to the Middle Ages. The cake is very similar to a Rosco de Reyes cake. Pick up your raffle ticket when you use our curbside pickup service between Tuesday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 12. One lucky winner will receive a genuine King Cake shipped from the Manny Randazzo bakery outside of New Orleans! Additional information about Mardi Gras and other treats will accompany the cake. Learn basic hand-sewing skills and embroidery stitches, and decorate a felt heart ornament to share with someone you love. All stitchers ages 10 and up welcome. Join BMoCA Educator Melinda Laz for an interactive online workshop inspired by BMoCA's current exhibition John Torreano: The Big Picture – Painting from the Universe.

John Torreano lives in New York City, but his artwork takes inspiration from outer space! Looking at photographs taken by the Hubble telescope (which beams back to earth pictures of stars, galaxies and black holes far, far away) he then creates large paintings, adding shiny rhinestones and layers of beautiful color!

Log on to our virtual meeting to learn more about the artist’s work and get inspired to make your own art! Melinda will guide participants through a fun art activity inspired by the artwork shown.

Join BMoCA Educator Melinda Laz for a video demonstration and interactive online art workshop discussing BMoCA's Spring 2020 exhibition Night Reels: The Work of Stacey Steers. Artist Stacey Steers is known internationally for her process-driven, labor-intensive animated films composed of thousands of handmade works on paper. The exhibition featured several of her films, sculptures, installations and collages. For this program, a video and art project will be presented online that you can watch and create in the comfort of your own home. 

A live video chat via Zoom will follow on Friday, Jan 29 at 4:00pm, during which questions can be asked and answered, additional demonstration can occur, and participants can chat or share their work with BMoCA Educator Melinda Laz. Registration will be limited to 20 participants; Registrants will be provided with necessary art supplies to create their project (available for pick-up at the Perl Mack Branch). Gather with fellow community members to reflect, connect and create new civic traditions that are meaningful and communal. Through songs, readings and discussions, local artists, community members and Anythink staff will share inspiration on the theme of “Facing Conflict.” How can we participate in difficult – and important – conversations with the people in our lives? How do we reflect on relationships negatively affected by politics? 

Civic Saturday is hosted in conjunction with Living Room Conversations. Local performers and guest speakers will also be featured, including The Reminders and poet Franklin Cruz. Participating families will also be provided materials to encourage young children to engage in the conversation.
